POSITION:  Transportation Assistant Director, Field Safety & Operations (Non-Union Position)

LOCATION:  Transportation Department

FTE:  1.0 (Full-time; 9:00am - 6:00pm)

CALENDAR:  259 Days Annually (will be prorated based on start date)

SALARY:  $40.70 - $45.30 Per Hour

JOB PURPOSE STATEMENT(S):  The purpose of the Transportation Assistant Director, Field Safety & Operations is to improve student achievement through the coordination of transportation activities associated with student safety, department success, driver communication, operational efficiency, district, and community relations.  Work is reviewed periodically to assure compliance to standards and measured results.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Supervises the Training and Safety Department.
  • Supervises all trainees and cover/trip driving staff.
  • Trains and supervises all load zone staff using the (ODE Crossing Guard training).
  • Evaluates all employee on-the-road performance.
  • Evaluates training staff.
  • Responsible for the recruitment, interviewing and onboarding of new and potential employees.
  • Responsible for the maintenance of the bus video surveillance system & video reviews.
  • Supervise drug & alcohol testing program.
  • Assist the Transportation Director with planning and execution of transportation annual in-service meeting.
  • Check road conditions as needed.
  • Create a training calendar for each school year.
  • Create and execute the Entry Level Driver Training Program.
  • Compliance with state and federal requirements for the assigned area(s).
  • Maintain the DMV Automated Reporting Service and records.
  • Maintain all ODE Driver Training and Testing Records.
  • Re-education and training of current employees as assigned by the Transportation Director.
  • Respond to vehicle accidents and student management calls as needed.
  • Designs and implements the school bus safe rider education program.
  • Schedule training for all new employees.
  • Type 10 & SPAB contractor records.
  • Training and compliance of all type 10 and SPAB contractors.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Attend all appropriate meetings as assigned.
  • Attend trainings and/or meetings to stay apprised of current rules and regulations.
  • Conduct CDL tests for Oregon School Bus Drivers.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with transportation employees, schools, and other district staff.
  • Investigate all safety concerns for bus loading areas, walking/crossing hazards, accidents, student management concerns, and others as assigned.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS – QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience Required: Minimum of five (5) years successful driving experience.  Previous experience with training and safety in school transportation.
  • Experience Preferred:  Accident investigation training and leadership techniques.
  • Skills, Knowledge and/or Abilities Required:

Skills to operate standard office equipment including use of basic computer applications, use English in both written and verbal form, use correct spelling, grammar and punctuation.  Effective communication skills with others and ability to work both as a team and independently.

 

Knowledge of ODE bus driver requirements, state, and federal laws for pupil transportation.

 

Ability to quickly acquire a working knowledge of departmental policies and procedures.

 

Ability to speak a second language.

  • Education Required: High school diploma, training in leadership techniques.
  • Licenses, Certification, Bonding, and/or Testing Required: 
    • Appropriate CDL and endorsements to drive an Oregon school bus;
    • ODE Behind the Wheel Instructor;
    • ODE CORE and Advanced Classroom Instructor;
    • ODE/DMV Third Party Tester;
    • First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor;
    • Trained in reasonable suspicion;
    • Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance (applicant agrees to assume cost upon offer of employment).

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:  Salary and work year to be established by the Board.

 

EVALUATION:  Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the Board’s Policy on Evaluation of Support Staff Personnel.  Reports to the Transportation Director.
